PNP Backs Tougher Regulations to End Illicit Vape Trade

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has thrown its support behind stricter regulations and stronger enforcement measures to combat the growing illegal vape trade in the country, citing increasing health concerns among young users.

PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said police units nationwide have been directed to intensify intelligence monitoring operations to identify individuals and organized groups involved in the distribution and sale of illicit vape products.

Authorities are particularly concerned about the accessibility of vape products to minors and the rising number of health issues linked to vaping among the youth.

“We are concerned by the health issues raised by our experts, especially on the adverse effects to teenagers, including minors who unfortunately have access to these products,” Nartatez said.

The Department of Health earlier reported an increase in lung-related illnesses among young vape users and has pushed for tougher laws, including the possible prohibition of vape products.

Nartatez said the PNP is prepared to support stronger legal measures aimed at protecting public health and curbing the spread of unregulated vape products in the market.

The police chief also stressed the importance of inter-agency cooperation in addressing the problem, noting that the PNP will strengthen coordination with partner government agencies to improve enforcement and close loopholes exploited by illegal traders.

The intensified campaign is aligned with the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla to strengthen measures safeguarding public health and consumer safety.

Meanwhile, the PNP called on the public to help authorities by reporting retailers and distributors selling unregistered or non-compliant vape products, especially those targeting minors and students.

“We encourage the public to report retailers selling unregistered and non-compliant illegal vape products, especially those targeting the youth sector,” Nartatez said.
