Second-Largest House Party Backs Marcos Amid Duterte Impeachment

A major political party in the House of Representatives has reaffirmed its support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s administration even as Congress prepares to vote on the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte, underscoring its call for independence in lawmakers’ decision-making.

The party remains committed to supporting governance and institutional stability while emphasizing that impeachment decisions must be left to the individual judgment of each member of Congress, according to NUP Chairman and Deputy Speaker Ronaldo “Ronnie” Puno.

“The National Unity Party has, since its inception, consistently stood as a reliable and steadfast partner of the administration, supporting its priorities and ensuring stability in governance,” Puno said in a statement. “At the same time, on a matter as serious as impeachment, every member must be guided by their own judgment, their conscience, and the interests of the people they represent.”

Puno said the party will not dictate how its members should vote, stressing that lawmakers should rely on their own evaluation of the evidence presented in the impeachment proceedings.

He added that the NUP views impeachment as a constitutional process that should remain free from partisan influence.

“We believe impeachment is a constitutional process, not a partisan exercise. The strength of our institutions lies in allowing each member to decide freely, without undue pressure or expectation of uniformity,” he said.

The party also called on House leadership to respect the independence of all members in exercising their constitutional duty, warning against any measures that could be seen as influencing or penalizing voting decisions.

Puno said any attempt to sanction lawmakers based on how they vote would raise serious concerns within the party.

“In matters of this nature, independence must be preserved. If any form of sanction or punitive measure is imposed on Members for voting according to their judgment, the Party will act collectively and respond in a manner it deems appropriate,” he said.

Despite its position on impeachment, the NUP reiterated its continued support for the Marcos administration, saying it remains committed to legislative cooperation and stable governance.

The party emphasized that Congress must be allowed to carry out its constitutional responsibilities without pressure, while maintaining integrity and respect for individual decision-making.

The NUP currently holds the distinction of being the second-largest political party in the House, giving it significant influence in legislative dynamics as the impeachment process moves closer to a plenary vote.
