Gin Kings, Bolts Turn Playoff Race Into Two-Team Charge for Top Four

Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and Meralco tightened their grip on the PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup playoff picture on Sunday night, turning the race for a coveted Top Four finish into a two-team surge after contrasting but equally decisive wins at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Still reeling from a heavy loss just two nights earlier, ironically to Meralco, the Gin Kings bounced back in emphatic fashion, dismantling erstwhile No. 1 Rain or Shine, 114 to 90, to reassert themselves as serious contenders for a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals.

Coach Tim Cone’s squad leaned on star power and timely support, with Justin Brownlee erupting for 40 points and RJ Abarrientos adding 23 points and 11 assists. It was their collective effort, particularly on defense, that stood out as Ginebra broke the game open after a tight first quarter.

The Gin Kings seized control before halftime, 51 to 42, then delivered a decisive third-quarter surge anchored on defensive stops and transition play. Scottie Thompson orchestrated the tempo with 17 points and 16 rebounds, while Ralph Cu provided a lift off the bench with 15 points, including five triples.

The win improved Ginebra to an 8 to 3 record, tying Rain or Shine and strengthening its hold on a Top Four spot, with one elimination game left to secure the bonus outright.

In the other game of the double-header, Meralco kept pace and applied pressure.

Fresh off its dominant win over Ginebra, the Bolts cruised past Blackwater, 108 to 93, to improve to 7 to 3 and stay within striking distance of the top tier. Import Marvin Jones led the way with 26 points and 12 rebounds, as six players scored in double figures.

Meralco quickly took control, turning an early deficit into a 31 to 18 lead behind a strong run that set the tone. The advantage grew to as much as 26 points, allowing the Bolts to dictate the tempo and manage the game down the stretch.

Head coach Luigi Trillo credited his team’s consistency and focus as key to sustaining their push for a twice-to-beat advantage.

With two games remaining, the Bolts have positioned themselves to challenge the current Top Four, setting up a tense finish to the eliminations.

As the standings tighten, what once appeared to be a crowded race is now shaping into a high-stakes duel, with Ginebra’s resurgence matched by Meralco’s steady climb. Both teams are peaking at the right time, with playoff incentives on the line.
