Supply Mission to Pag-asa Island Draws AFP Support

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has expressed support for a civilian-led mission delivering supplies to residents of Pag-asa Island in the West Philippine Sea, as a coalition of advocates set sail from Manila.

The group, known as Atin Ito, departed from Manila South Harbor aboard the MV Kapitan Felix Oca, with an expected arrival at Pag-asa Island on Saturday. The mission aims to bring food and other essential goods to island residents, marking the coalition’s fourth such voyage in the past three years.

In addition to the relief distribution, organizers said the trip will include a symbolic “patriotic jetski flag ride,” led by Akbayan party-list Rep. Percival Cendaña as part of the broader civilian initiative highlighting the Philippine presence in the area.

The military said it welcomed the initiative, describing it as aligned with the welfare of Filipino communities in remote island territories.

Rear Admiral (Res.) Roy Vincent Trinidad said the mission underscores the country’s position regarding the West Philippine Sea and highlights continued support for Filipino fishermen and island residents.

He said the AFP is providing coordination support and maritime domain awareness to help ensure the safety and smooth passage of the civilian convoy.

Trinidad added that the Armed Forces remains committed to its constitutional duty of protecting Philippine sovereignty while also ensuring that citizens in outlying areas can access basic necessities without fear or intimidation.

He also emphasized solidarity with fishing communities and civil society groups participating in the mission, describing their presence as a reaffirmation of the country’s claim and connection to the West Philippine Sea.

The AFP said it continues to support efforts that promote safe navigation, peaceful civilian activity, and a rules-based maritime order in the region.
