La Union Gets a Beachside Readathon This May

Fully Booked brings a beachside reading event to Alpas La Union

A quiet afternoon by the sea may soon come with a different kind of activity… One that trades surfboards for paperbacks.

This May, a community reading session is set to take place along the coast of La Union, offering a slower alternative to the province’s usual surf-and-party scene. Organized by Fully Booked, the event aims to bring together beachgoers and readers for a laid-back gathering timed with the area’s well-known sunsets.

The one-day activity will be held on May 9, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Alpas La Union in the town of Bacnotan, located north of the more crowded San Juan strip. The venue, known for its mix of open-air spaces, café, and live events, has increasingly become a quieter alternative for visitors looking to avoid peak tourist areas.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own books, although a selection of titles will also be available on-site for those who want to browse or borrow. The idea is to spend a few hours reading by the beach, with no formal program or structured activities.

The event is free to attend, with attendees only required to purchase food or drinks from the venue’s in-house café during their stay. Organizers have opened registration online to manage the number of participants.

Reading events in outdoor settings have gained traction in recent years, particularly as more communities look for low-pressure, social alternatives to traditional gatherings. In La Union, where tourism is often associated with surfing and nightlife, initiatives like this introduce a quieter option that still makes use of the area’s natural appeal.

For those heading north this May, the invitation is straightforward: find a spot, open a book, and stay until the light fades.
