Ortega: 88 Percent Want Duterte to Face Senate Trial, Calls for Accountability Over ‘Drama’

Deputy Speaker and La Union Rep. Paolo Ortega V on Friday said a recent survey showing overwhelming public support for a Senate impeachment trial underscores the need to move forward with proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte.

Citing results from the Tangere survey, Ortega noted that 88 percent of respondents believe Duterte should face a formal trial to answer allegations against her. He said the figure reflects a broad public demand for accountability rather than a position limited to political critics.

“When nearly nine out of 10 Filipinos are calling for a Senate trial, it shows a clear desire for answers in the proper forum,” Ortega said.

As one of the complainants in the impeachment case, Ortega stressed that the House Committee on Justice now carries a heavier responsibility, as it serves as the bridge between public sentiment and the constitutional process that could bring the case before the Senate.

“The committee is no longer just hearing complaints—it is responding to a clear call from the public to determine whether there is a case to answer,” he said.

The lawmaker added that the survey challenges claims that the impeachment effort is purely political, arguing that many Filipinos view the trial as a legitimate venue for Duterte to defend herself.

He also criticized the Vice President’s camp for issuing statements outside formal proceedings instead of directly addressing the allegations under oath.

“It is easy to speak outside, but accountability requires facing questions in a forum where statements are recorded and subject to scrutiny,” Ortega said.

According to Ortega, the survey results also reflect growing public frustration over what he described as a lack of clear responses on key issues, including financial records and the use of public funds.

He urged Duterte to attend the proceedings and present her side, saying the public expects direct and verifiable answers.

“This is no longer about rhetoric. The public wants clarity, and the proper place to provide that is in a formal trial,” Ortega said.
