GCash has rolled out its new Digital Tax Refund service across 16 countries, allowing Filipino travelers shopping abroad to receive eligible value-added tax (VAT) refunds in minutes directly to their e-wallets, the mobile payments platform announced Thursday.
The feature, developed in partnership with cross-border digital payment provider Alipay+ and global tax refund operator Global Blue, converts eligible refunds directly into Philippine pesos and credits them to the user’s GCash account. This eliminates the weeks-long waiting periods typically associated with crediting traditional bank accounts or credit cards.
The service is initially available in 16 destinations: Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Argentina, Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Latvia, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland. GCash stated that additional countries will be integrated into the service soon.
Traditionally, Filipino tourists claiming tax refunds overseas had to choose between receiving physical cash in local foreign currency, which often goes unused after returning home or waiting one to four weeks or longer for funds to process through standard card networks.
The new feature streamlines this process at the airport. After validating their shopping and travel documents with local customs, travelers can open the “Tax Refund” option within the GCash app to generate a personal QR code. Once scanned by a representative at the airport tax refund counter, the funds are credited directly to the user’s GCash wallet in pesos with a real-time notification.
“International travel should be about enjoying the journey, not worrying about lengthy refund processes or leftover foreign currency,” Carlos Bauza, Vice President for International Payments at GCash International, said in a statement.
“Through Digital Tax Refund, we are giving Filipino travelers a faster and more convenient way to receive the money they are entitled to, directly in Philippine pesos through the GCash app they already use every day,” Bauza added.
The expansion comes as digital finance platforms continue to broaden cross-border functionalities, helping international travelers save time, manage foreign purchases efficiently and streamline foreign exchange processes abroad.
