‘Lead Modestly’? San Fernando Mayor’s Chanel, Burberry, and Ralph Lauren Wardrobe at Relief Ops Raises Ethics Concerns

City of San Fernando Mayor Vilma Balle-Caluag has found herself at the center of growing public backlash after local reports and viral social media posts highlighted her choice of designer attire and visible luxury accessories during flood inspections and relief distributions.

The controversy erupted following recent severe monsoon rains and typhoon-induced flooding that left thousands of residents in low-lying barangays stranded and seeking emergency assistance. As local disaster management teams mobilized to distribute relief packs and assess damaged infrastructure, the mayor’s presence in flood-affected areas drew attention for reasons beyond emergency response.

Photographs and video clips circulated widely across social media platforms showing Caluag wearing identifiable high-end brand apparel and flashy jewelry while navigating submerged streets and speaking with displaced families. The sharp visual contrast between inundated neighborhoods and thousand-dollar designer labels triggered widespread indignation among local residents and netizens. Many criticized the display as insensitive and “out of touch,” arguing that high-fashion items were inappropriate for disaster response operations where residents had lost basic necessities, homes and livelihoods.

Comments social media sarcastically called the inspection a “fashion show in the floodwaters,” questioning the empathy and judgment of municipal leadership during a high-stress crisis.

As floodwaters recede in parts of San Fernando, the incident underscores the heightened scrutiny local leaders face during disaster management where tone, visual empathy and public presentation are judged just as closely as the distribution of government aid.
