The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has stepped up the monitoring and clearing of rivers, esteros, drainage systems, and coastal areas to protect communities amid persistent heavy rainfall in Metro Manila and other regions.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro announced the intensified operations during a press briefing, stating that the efforts directly align with instructions from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to prioritize public safety.
Under Acting Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna, the DENR is deploying its Estero Rangers and River Warriors in coordination with partner organizations to remove debris and maintain unobstructed water flow in flood-prone areas.
The national government’s flood mitigation strategy also involves close coordination between key agencies and local government units. President Marcos has instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to align its flood mitigation efforts with the Quezon City government’s master plan to help drain floodwaters more effectively.
Additionally, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has directed its regional and provincial officials, along with local leaders, to remain in close contact with local disaster risk reduction and management councils to monitor local weather developments and respond swiftly.
