PNP Backs DepEd Rules on Firearms, Police Attire in Schools

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has backed new Department of Education (DepEd) guidelines that restrict firearms and regulate police presence on campus to foster a safer, child-friendly environment.

Aligned with instructions from President Ferdinand “Bongbong” R. Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla, PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. directed units to coordinate with administrators prior to campus visits and prohibit firearms in classrooms during routine engagements.

“The safety and well-being of our children remain our priority. Police presence in schools should provide a sense of security and partnership, not fear or intimidation,” Nartatez stated. “As such, we respect the guidelines issued by DepEd. Our personnel will comply with the requirements on proper attire, coordination and the carrying or display of firearms inside school premises.”

Under the policy, which aligns with DepEd Camarines Norte Memorandum No. 315, series of 2026, visiting personnel must wear Type C or noncombat attire, and displaying weapons in learning areas is strictly prohibited. Armed patrols, checkpoints and enforcement operations are barred from school grounds. Furthermore, official school engagements, such as safety lectures, anti-drug campaigns, disaster drills and community outreach, require prior coordination with the school head and endorsement from the Schools Division Office.

“We remind our personnel to strictly observe these guidelines when conducting activities in schools. Coordinate with school authorities and ensure that every engagement is conducted with professionalism and respect for the school as a safe learning environment,” Nartatez added.
