Telco Defenses Tighten As Scammers Shift To SIM-Based Fraud

Globe Telecom Inc. has strengthened its multi-layered security measures to protect customers from spoofed text messages, malicious links, and SIM-based fraud as scammers shift to more sophisticated tactics.

“Scammers are constantly looking for new ways to reach potential victims. As the industry strengthens controls against one type of attack, we often see fraudsters shift to different tactics and platforms,” said Garrett Silao, Globe’s chief information security officer.

“This is why anti-scam efforts cannot rely on a single solution. It requires continuous innovation, collaboration, and public awareness,” he added.

Globe said it has steadily expanded its defenses against digital scams by securing enterprise sender IDs, blocking malicious links, detecting SIM box operations, and using network analytics to identify suspicious activity.

The company said these measures have helped reduce common SMS-based scams that previously targeted millions of mobile users.

As traditional scam methods become harder to carry out, fraudsters have begun using more advanced tools, including illegal IMSI catchers or fake cell towers that trick nearby mobile devices into connecting to them instead of legitimate cellular networks.

Unlike spoofed SMS messages that originate within messaging systems, IMSI catchers broadcast stronger signals that cause nearby phones to connect automatically, allowing scammers to bypass standard security controls.

Globe said the use of such devices shows how cybercriminals continue to adjust their methods as security systems improve.

To counter evolving threats, the telecommunications company said it has adopted an approach that combines network protection, threat intelligence, industry coordination, and customer education.

Globe said it also works with enterprise partners to secure legitimate messaging channels, blocks known phishing websites, and shares threat intelligence with financial institutions, government agencies, and law enforcement authorities to speed up the detection of and response to emerging scams.

The company has also expanded its consumer protection initiatives through Go Safe with Globe, Scam Shield on the GlobeOne app, customer advisories, and digital literacy campaigns aimed at helping Filipinos identify and avoid fraudulent schemes.

“Technology plays a critical role in protecting customers, but awareness is equally important,” Silao said.

“The more informed people are about how scams work, the more difficult it becomes for fraudsters to succeed. Protecting consumers is a shared responsibility that requires industry, government, and the public to work together,” he added.
