The Philippine National Police–Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG), through the Pangasinan Provincial Highway Patrol Team, has recovered a 2024 Mazda MX-5 Coupe allegedly involved in a rent-tangay scheme during an operation in Barangay Malabog, Daraga, Albay on June 24, 2026.
Authorities said the operation stemmed from a complaint filed by the authorized representative of the registered owner, who reported that the sports car had been rented in October 2025 but was not returned after the agreed rental period.
Using the vehicle’s installed GPS tracking system, investigators were able to locate the unit in Daraga, prompting the deployment of HPG personnel to verify and recover the car.
Further investigation showed the vehicle had allegedly changed possession after being pawned by the renter for P800,000. The individual in possession of the car voluntarily surrendered it to authorities after learning it was linked to the scheme and pledged cooperation with the investigation.
PNP-HPG Director Police Brig. Gen. Rommel Batangan praised the operation, citing coordination between units and the use of tracking technology in resolving the case.
He said the recovery highlights the importance of timely reporting, inter-unit cooperation, and responsible use of vehicle rental arrangements to prevent fraud and related crimes.
