Remulla: PNP to Submit Probe Report on Ateneo Student-Athlete Deaths on Tuesday

Secretary Juanito Victor “Jonvic” Remulla said the Philippine National Police (PNP) is expected to submit its investigation report to the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Tuesday regarding the deaths of Ateneo student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

“The report is not yet complete… Maybe by Tuesday, we’re going to bring to the DOJ our full report,” Sec. Remulla said in an ambush interview at Camp Crame.

He said the investigation is still ongoing and declined to identify possible liabilities.

“People died. If there are people who died, there is always liability. I cannot yet say as of now who are liable,” he added.

The Department of Interior and Local and Government (DILG) Secretary said former Ateneo basketball coach Thomas Anthony “Tab” Baldwin and other members of the coaching staff have been subpoenaed to appear before the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) on Friday.

Baldwin and several staff members previously failed to attend a scheduled CIDG appearance last Monday as part of the fact-finding investigation.

Sec. Remulla warned that failure to appear may result in contempt proceedings.

“If he does not appear on Friday before the CIDG, we will cite him in contempt,” he said.

He added that the submission of findings will follow once statements from coaches are completed.

Asked whether all team members have been interviewed, Sec. Remulla said one individual has yet to be accounted for, but interviews are expected to be completed by Monday.

PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said around 80 percent of subpoenaed individuals have already been interviewed, with additional interviews ongoing.

“We are leading to that. We cannot yet say, but we are heading in that direction,” Nartatez said when asked about possible charges.

He added it is still premature to determine the number of individuals who may be charged or the specific cases to be filed.

However, he said investigators are looking at possible violations of the Anti-Hazing Law.
