The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has confirmed that authorities have begun investigating the deaths of Ateneo de Manila University student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
In a statement, the DILG extended its condolences to the families of the two victims and to the Ateneo community, describing the loss of the young student-athletes as a tragedy shared by the nation.
The department said the Philippine National Police (PNP), through the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), has launched a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the June 8, 2026 incident.
As part of the fact-finding process, subpoenas have been issued to the coaches and players who were present during the activity.
The DILG said investigators are also looking into possible violations of Republic Act No. 11053, or the Anti-Hazing Act of 2018.
“All concerned individuals are expected to fully cooperate with the investigating authorities,” the department said.
The DILG assured the public that due process will be strictly observed and that accountability will be enforced based on the findings of the investigation.
It also urged the public to avoid speculation while authorities continue their inquiry.
The department said allowing investigators to conduct a thorough and impartial probe is necessary out of respect for the grieving families and the truth that must be established.
