The Philippine Navy marked its 128th anniversary with the commissioning of the BRP Rajah Lakandula, a new offshore patrol vessel expected to strengthen the country’s maritime security and territorial defense operations.
The anniversary rites were held on June 9, 2026 at the Navy headquarters in Naval Station Jose Andrada in Manila, carrying the theme “PN @128: Modern and Ready, Strong and Steady – Credible in Mission, Always Mission-Ready.”
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), led the ceremony as guest of honor.
A major highlight of the celebration was the commissioning of BRP Rajah Lakandula, formally designated as PS21. The vessel is seen as a key addition to the Navy’s expanding fleet as it continues to modernize amid growing maritime security challenges.
“Truly, this is a pivotal step towards realizing the Navy’s vision of a modern and self-reliant force,” Marcos said.
The Navy said the new patrol vessel would help enhance maritime security, improve territorial defense capability, and support the country’s role in promoting regional peace and stability.
Over the past year, the Navy sustained maritime patrols and surveillance operations, supported the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept, and participated in multilateral exercises and engagements with partner nations.
It also carried out humanitarian assistance and disaster response missions, as well as civil-military operations aimed at strengthening public trust and community support.
As part of its modernization program, the Navy said it has expanded its capabilities through newly commissioned vessels, improved personnel training, leadership development, and investments in cyber defense.
It also continues to deepen partnerships with allied and friendly nations to improve interoperability and readiness in responding to current and future maritime challenges.
“Ang lahat ng ating pinagsamang pagsisikap, pagbabantay, pagmamalasakit, at pagtutulungan ay nakatuon sa iisang layunin, para sa bayan, para sa ating karagatan at para sa mas magandang kinabukasan ng sambayanan,” Navy Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta said.
Marcos commended the Navy for its service and commitment, saying its personnel continue to keep the Philippine flag raised even in difficult conditions.
“So, I thank you for always keeping our flag flying high even above the roughest waters. For your unwavering loyalty in the face of the storm, I say this: Bravo Zulu. Job well done to you all,” the President said.
He also said the Navy carries not only the Philippine flag but also the trust and hope of the Filipino people as it safeguards the country’s waters.
The Navy said its 128th anniversary serves as a call for national solidarity behind its mission to protect Philippine seas and secure the country’s maritime future.
